Basically weeds grow either from seed, or they reproduce from their roots. As the roots grow outward from the parent plant, new plants sprout up from the lateral roots, creating more parent plants and the process continues and the weeds thrive. Weeds that tend to reproduce from the root are usually more difficult to control.

Weed control facts? Weeds are plants, and they function just like the desirable plants in your yard. They need water, sunlight, and nutrition to survive. Of these three key survival needs, the easiest one for a gardener to eliminate is sunlight. Through proper mulching you can eliminate the sunlight.

But first, let’s look at the steps you should go through before you mulch, then we’ll discuss the best mulching techniques to use. In order for your weed control efforts to be truly effective, you should do everything in your power to make your gardens as weed free as possible before you plant or mulch. There are a couple of ways you can go about this, either organically or with chemicals. I don’t like using chemicals, but I do use them for weed control, and I use them for pest control when necessary.

I’ll discuss organic control first. The first thing you should do is remove all unwanted vegetation from your planting area. Using a hoe, spade or other digging device, undercut the roots and remove the undesirable plants, roots and all. Then you should work the soil by rototilling or turning the soil by hand.

Once worked, let the soil sit for four days or so, and work it again. Keep doing this over and over as long as time permits. This process serves two purposes. It brings the roots that were left in the soil close to the surface so they can be dried by the sun, which will make them non-viable, and it disturbs the weed seeds that have started to germinate, which makes them non-viable as well. The longer you continue this process the more weeds you are eliminating from your garden.

Weed control facts? Depending on the time of the year, there are a few billion weed seeds drifting through the air at any given time, so to think that you can eventually rid a garden of weed seed is false thinking, but at least this process is effective for the remaining roots, which are the most difficult to control.

How to Use Psychological Tactics to Avoid Strangers on a Bus

A sociologist who rode coach buses for three years has codified the unspoken rules of avoiding total strangers.

“We live in a world of strangers, where life in public spaces feels increasingly anonymous,” said sociologist Esther Kim of Yale University in a press release. “However, avoiding other people actually requires quite a lot of effort and this is especially true in confined spaces like public transport.”

Buses provide a relatively inexpensive way of traveling long-distance, but the trips can take days. Sitting next to an unpleasant person can turn a long ride into an extended nightmare. Most riders try to keep the seat beside them open, maintaining a small but important space to stretch legs, curl up and generally be alone.

Of course, courtesy dictates that riders share their seats when asked, turning periods of passenger embarkation into silent struggles.

To document the psychological battleground, Kim embedded herself in it, logging thousands of miles on long-distance buses. In addition to documenting passenger behavior, she interviewed many of them to understand their strategies. Her findings were published July 16 in Symbolic Interaction.

“We engage in all sorts of behavior to avoid others, pretending to be busy, checking phones, rummaging through bags, looking past people or falling asleep,” she said in the release. “Sometimes we even don a ‘don’t bother me face’ or what’s known as the ‘hate stare.’”

Kim systematized the unspoken rules into a list of strategies commonly used to keep a free seat:

  • Avoid eye contact.
  • Lean against the window and stretch out your legs.
  • Sit on the aisle seat and listen to music to pretend not to hear people asking for the window seat.
  • Place a large bag or multiple items in the empty seat to make it time-consuming to move.
  • Look out the window with a blank stare to appear crazy.
  • Pretend to be asleep.
  • Put your coat on the seat to make it appear already taken.
  • If all else fails, lie: Say the seat has been taken by someone else.

The game changed, however, when drivers announced a bus would be full. Riders just wanted to avoid the “crazy” person and sit next to a “normal” person.

Kim found that race, class and gender weren’t key concerns when commuters realized someone had to sit next them. They were primarily concerned with maintaining their own safety.

“Ultimately this nonsocial behavior is due to the many frustrations of sharing a small public space together for a lengthy amount of time,” Kim said in the release. “Yet this deliberate disengagement is a calculated social action, which is part of a wider culture of social isolation in public spaces.”

A great way to improve memory is to practise memorization. Every day, make an effort to memorize something; say for example a recipe, a poetry, or maybe a simple phrase. Write it down and then try to recall it a couple of times throughout the day. You can also go as far as to try to remember it the very next day. If you find it is difficult to do for the first few times, do not get disappointed. Just like everything else, it requires practice. Soon after few weeks, you may notice that you could recall and remember things more regularly and more effectively.

Write things down

There’s a miracle about writing things down when it comes to enhancing your memory. The act of writing engages several parts of your brain and activates more of the senses. As a result of writing, it is possible to clarify and organize what you’ll want to remember and also the written word gives a source from which you can refresh your memory later.

Engage all of your senses

Your fundamental senses are seeing, hearing and doing. While we realize that smells and tastes are great for initiating a recall, employing them to help you remember something often takes an increased level of organization. The more of the senses that you could engage, the firmer your memory interactions will be.

Pay Attention

A lot more people get caught up in multitasking and often fail to do it completely. Most of them fail to pay attention to the task at hand. This is very important, since your brain requires time to encode the information accurately. If it never makes it into your memory, you will not be able to recollect it later. If you want to memorize something, give up multitasking and start focusing on one particular task.
